چکیده

The performance dependence of optically injection-locked 1.55 mm VCSELs by downstream signals in a bidirectional optical link on the degree of Rayleigh backscattered signal and modulation depth of the master DFB laser is studied. Such a study is important for operation in bidirectional WDM-PONs. Error-free upstream performance is achieved when the upstream signal to Rayleigh backscattering ratio is greater than 13.4 dB, and with minimal dependence on the downstream extinction ratio. The frequency response of the OIL-VCSEL explains for the first time the suppression of the modulated downstream signal at the VCSEL input, enabling stable injection locking comparable to that of CW master injection.

Novel cascaded injection-locked 1.55-mum VCSELs with 66 GHz modulation bandwidth.

We demonstrate a novel cascaded configuration of optically injection-locked (COIL) VCSELs, which enables a wide and tailorable direct modulation bandwidth. Up to 66 GHz bandwidth is achieved using VCSELs with an original, free-running 10 GHz bandwidth. Different configurations of cascading are discussed in detail with the focus on optimizing the modulation bandwidth. We also discuss scaling cap...

Adjustable Chirp Injection-Locked 1.55-μm VCSELs for Enhanced Chromatic Dispersion Compensation at 10-Gbit/s

We demonstrate adjustable negative chirp from a directly-modulated, injection-locked 1.55-μm VCSEL by controlling the injection parameters. Chromatic dispersion tolerance is enhanced by greater than 10X at 10-Gb/s compared to that of a free-running VCSELs. ©2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (230.2035) Dispersion compensation devices, (250.7260) Vertical cavity surface emitting lasers
